When I was in high school, there was a language requirement, and we had to rank the four available choices.  It was towards the end of the cold war, but that time heavily influenced me, so I listed Russian as my first choice.  In my little town, they, of course, did not actually offer Russian.  Who knows why they listed it as a choice year after year?  Next, I ranked German.  Of course they didn’t have the resources to teach that either.  Why I listed French rather than Spanish next, I chalk up to a lack of guidance (throughout my education), as Spanish would be far more useful in the neighborhoods I lived in.

I had a profound lack of focus in high school which took me a long time to overcome, so in the language class, rather than paying attention, I read French magazines.   Being a 15-year-old boy, I was drawn to the car adverts.  Thus began a lifelong interest in advertisements.

Little did I know that I would practice for a while in Canada, and if I had paid attention in class, remembering my French would have been an asset.  Nonetheless, I continued to be interested in commercials as they provide insights into a society’s values and priorities.

During this time living in Canada, I was driving to Montreal and there was this clever billboard.  It said “Chevy Malibu, because an Accord is, by definition, a compromise”.  I was impressed by both the wordplay, as well as how the writer presumed a fair degree of sophistication in their intended audience.  This provided some (positive) insight into Canadian values and priorities.

In Detroit, we are right across the border (north of it actually) from Ontario and receive Canadian TV and Radio.  Yesterday, I heard a radio ad stating,  “Brookstone Windows and Doors, since keeping you warm is not just a hypothesis”. I don’t think I had ever heard the word “hypothesis” in a commercial before, and was somewhat surprised that the copywriter would use this scientific word in a “lay” ad.

A few years ago, we made our JMRI abstracts more granular.  We added background and statistics sections – and specified that a purpose/hypothesis (so labeled) must be clearly stated.  We take some pride that numerous other journals have adopted a similar format, modeled after us.

We wanted a statistical analysis section to stress the importance of data analysis rigor.  We wanted a background section to emphasize the need to set the stage for one’s research.  And we wanted a clear hypothesis to stress that great research is hypothesis driven. Just like most advertisements have some sort of background story, good ad men use data to analyze their intended purchaser, and effective commercials have an aim they seek to achieve; so should a good paper- in whatever language it is written in.

(A) CrCESTasym MAPS OF A HUMAN CALF MUSCLE CAPTURED BEFORE AND AT 24-SECOND INTERVALS FOLLOWING 2 MINUTES OF MILD PLANTAR FLEXION EXERCISE (ARRANGED SEQUENTIALLY BY NUMBER). THE ERROR BARS INDICATE THE STANDARD DEVIATION OF CrCESTasym WITHIN EACH MUSCLE REGION. THE SEGMENTED ANATOMICAL IMAGE IS SITUATED IN THE LOWER RIGHT CORNER. (B) PLOT ILLUSTRATING THE TEMPORAL VARIATION OF THE MEAN CrCESTasym VALUES ACROSS THREE DISTINCT CALF MUSCLES (LG, MG, AND SOL, WHICH WERE DELINEATED FROM ANATOMICAL IMAGES (LOCATED IN THE BOTTOM RIGHT CORNER). SOLID LINES REPRESENT THE SPLINE INTERPOLATION THAT FITS THE DATA POINTS. BY CHAKRABORTY ET AL. (1681-1692)
