When I was six or seven years old, my dad took me to my first baseball game. Surprisingly he let me go to the restroom alone, quite unusual even in those days (especially in New York City), and I got lost on my way back. So, I found an usher and showed him my ticket and asked for the way back to my seats. The usher then said it’s all the way, all the way, all the way, all the way around, and with precocious ignorance, I asked him if it would be quicker to go the other way, not realizing that baseball stadiums were horseshoes (not circles). The usher just laughed at me.

Baseball season just began, and in the Yankees game last night they had 20 runs. Part of this was attributed to a new torpedo like bat. The news story described this bat as being designed by a former physicist. The modifier “former” before physicist irked me. When (perhaps if) I retire, would I be a former radiologist? How many of our society members when they retire would consider themselves former physicists?

There was a donor to Stony Brook, and he was an ambassador for a short period of time, but everyone addressed him still as ambassador.  It sounded impressive to me, and I mused that I would like to spend one day as an ambassador just for the perpetual title. Work, perhaps too much, is our identity, and I think if you have studied many years and served society (small “s”), that should always be your identity.

Physics doesn’t often make it into the lay media, with circuitous (rather than horseshoe-ous) explanations on how this bat design affected air speed; it’s pretty special when it does.

(Way) back when I was a resident, if you would get a tough case right during conference, the attending would say that you “hit a home run.” The unnamed and non-former physicist who designed this revolutionary bat, hit 20.
