JMRI Letter from the Editor: October 2025

My grandparents lived in what we used to call “projects” in New York, but might be known as public housing or council housing elsewhere. It was a reasonable apartment, but quite dreary. What I remember most was the sterility and the complete absence of greenery or trees. Trees became very important to my grandfather. Whenever he would see me just picking a leaf off a tree in a park, he would get quite upset. Anything green to him was precious. It wasn’t until many years later that I fully understood why.

Their apartment was just a stone’s throw from the US Tennis Center, where the US open was playing a few weeks ago. Although less than a mile away as the crow flies, as I described above, it is light years away in foliage and clientele from my grandparents’ place.

Venus Williams, and her potential comeback, was one of the big stories in this year’s open (her singles performance was somewhat subpar, but her doubles skills were quite impressive). I thought she might be trying to make a point of her athletic viability at age 45 and perhaps put herself in the record books one more time. One of her reasons was health insurance. Her COBRA (the US government mandated employee option to continue paying for their employer provided insurance) was about to run out.  By re-entering the professional tennis world, she is able to obtain health insurance through her (indirect) employer, the Women’s Tennis Association.

I was honored a few years back to be one of the radiologists at the Vancouver Winter Olympics. Far less glamorous than it sounds, with lots of down time. We were glued to our seats in the medical tent, so I figured I might get my teeth cleaned by the dentist, next door to the reading room, during the copious free time. When I went to try and book an appointment, every minute of every day was already taken. It seems like these athletes all get reasonable sports care from the home nations, but your teeth do not affect your medal winning potential, so they do not qualify for dental care.

What an odd culture we have when some us look at arboreals like a gemstone. What an odd system we have in the US, when a millionaire athlete has limited health insurance options when they stop playing. What an odd world we live in, when world class athletes are not entitled to dental care. What an odd world indeed. What an unjust world.

Quantitative maps obtained in two representative participants in the younger (age = 26 years, male) and older (age = 58 years, male) groups, at Visit 1 for both field strengths (1.5 T and 3 T). The images arranged from left to right include: Perfusion weighted images (pixel values are PWS in %) for six post-labeling delays (PLDs = 0.4, 0.7, 1, 1.3, 1.6, and 1.9 s); renal blood flow (RBF) map (mL/min/100 g) calculated using the single-delay data for the PLD of 1.3 s; RBF (mL/min/100 g) and arterial transit time (ATT) maps (s) calculated using the multi-delay data; and T1 map (ms).
