JMRI Letter from the Editor: November 2025

Like all of you, I tend to work long hours.  More difficult than the hours is the intensity.  Hence, when I am not working, I need to put my brain into park, or better yet — reverse.  Cinema for me often plays the role of resetting my synapses and backfilling my neurotransmitters.

Although I view films as escapism, I can’t help but try and understand what motivates directors. Life leaks through even entertainment.

Aaron Sorkin, the screenwriter (The Social Network, Molly’s Game) said dialogue is what gets him going.  When he was little, his parents took him to Broadway shows that he clearly didn’t and couldn’t understand.  However, this experience led him to admire the to and through between actors.  This love of dialogue laid the foundation for this career.  Hence, the strength of his films is the repartee.

The Māori writer-director Taratoa Stappard is from New Zealand.  He films his movies there and that topography and the cinematography thereof makes these films unique.  The sets of a Wes Anderson movies play a similar role. Both of these directors use the visual to represent or clarify themes.

Islands is a film set in the Canary Islands, hence its title.  The primary nidus of the film is, however, less location than the personality of the lead character.  In this movie, directed by Jan-Ole Gerster, the center of the plot is the repetitive life of an aging tennis pro. His backstory and motivation are the fulcrum of the movie.

You can’t help but admire Stephen King both for his proliferative career, as well as for his imagination.  All his works are beautifully plot driven.  It is an impressive mind that develops ideas that are both scary in the horror sense and scary in a fear of our humanity sense.

Sorkin focuses on the lyricism of dialogue.  Stappard on the visual.  Gerster on the character and King on the plot.

Maybe movies don’t recharge me as much as they reinforce the day job.

Every paper has a bit of Sorkin (the presentation), Stappard (the figures), Gerster (the nidus/the aim), and King (the methodology of the experiment).  Poor papers have strengths in none of these.  Fair ones only have one of these strengths. Good papers may have two.  Great ones three.  But exceptional ones, ones that stand the test of time, ones that provide the foundation for many other manuscripts, encompass all four.   Like a great director, excellence in every part of the paper is what we should strive for.

Representative wave images of the xy, and z components of the vector displacement field as well as elastograms at 90 Hz from four subjects. The intraocular pressure by Goldmann applanation tonometry and the stiffness of the anterior segment were 11 mmHg/2.22 kPa (right) and 10 mmHg/2.05 kPa (left) in the first subject; 14 mmHg/2.62 kPa (right) and 14 mmHg/2.60 kPa (left) in the second subject; 17 mmHg/3.22 kPa (right) and 17 mmHg/2.91 kPa (left) in the third subject; 17.3 mmHg/3.22 kPa (right) and 14.3 mmHg/2.57 kPa (left) in the fourth subject. The dashed lines overlaid on the wave images and elastograms represent the anterior segment and whole eye regions of interest. By Gai et al. (1483–1493)
