We are proud to bring you, in digital format, the 2026 edition of MRM Highlights magazine, and invite members of the ISMRM community to scroll below to browse its pages. Alternatively, click here to download the PDF.

This year marks a historic moment for our community: for the first time ever, the ISMRM Annual Meeting arrives on African soil. To celebrate, we shine a spotlight on ISMRM in Africa, with interviews featuring Godwin Ogbole, Andrew Webb, and Udunna Anazodo (pages 4–12). Their stories reflect the resilience, creativity, and collaborative spirit shaping MR research across the continent.

With the 2026 Annual Meeting in Cape Town, we also turn to ISMRM in Cape Town, profiling Ernesta Meintjes, Aaron Hess, Andre van der Kouwe, Adam van Niekerk, and Petronella Samuels (pages 13–26). Their voices trace the founding of CUBIC, decades of cross-Atlantic collaboration, and the realities of doing world-class MR science in a resource-constrained setting.

This issue also features presidential interviews with ISMRM President Mark Griswold and ISMRT President Adam D. Scotson (pages 27–32), offering insights into leadership, mentorship, and the future of our field.

We showcase profiles of the 2026 Mansfield Lecturer Richard Bowtell, the 2026 Lauterbur Lecturer Kirsten Donald, and the 2026 NIBIB New Horizons Lecturer Maruf Adewole (pages 33–38), along with a retrospective on the 2001 Young Investigator Award winners Andrew Janke and Gunnar Krueger (page 41) and a preview of the 2026 YIA finalists (page 45).

Our Q&A section is richer than ever (pages 59–74), tackling everything from preclinical diffusion MRI recommendations and single-shot GABA editing to vendor-agnostic relaxometry and motion-robust BOLD fMRI at 10.5 T.

Other highlights include:

  • Behind the scenes at MRM with Shannon Stepanian and Brandi Conroy (page 39)
  • The new ISMRM Impact Project series, beginning with parallel imaging (page 54)

We hope this issue informs, inspires, and reflects the collaborative spirit that drives our field forward.

Enjoy reading!
