MRM Letter from the Editor: November 2025

Dear Magnetic Resonance in Medicine Subscribers,

Firstly, a reminder that we are seeking keen writers for the forthcoming MRM Highlights magazine, and we also announce another initiative to celebrate the impact of Magn Reson Med.

With regard to MRM Highlights, the 2026 ISMRM Annual Meeting in Cape Town, South Africa, will see the 11th edition of the magazine. We seek expressions of interest from budding writers who would be interested in writing articles and interviewing people for this issue of MRM Highlights. Ideas for content will be discussed soon, and writing will start in late November/early December, but we are keen to attract some potential writers at this stage. To see an example of what MRM Highlights looks like please look at the 2025 issue here. If you are interested in joining us, please email the MRM Highlights Editor, Maria Eugenia Caligiuri at me.caligiuri@unicz.it.

The other initiative is being led by Diego Hernando, one of MRM’s Deputy Editors. He is planning to commission several articles to illustrate the impact of Magn Reson Med (as opposed to the unhelpful and misleading journal Impact Factor!). The idea is that each article will focus on a particular development that first appeared as a scientific paper (or papers) in Magn Reson Med and then tell the story (in a way that is accessible to the general public) of how it has impacted the way that MRI is performed in daily clinical routine. For example, the various parallel imaging approaches were first published in Magn Reson Med, and trace their roots to even earlier papers on phased array MRI coils, also published in Magn Reson Med. The plan is to create a series of articles that tell these stories (perhaps with interviews with some of the inventors), and then publish them on a public-facing part of ISMRM web site. These articles are intended to be highly visible and also linked from the Magn Reson Med home page, the ISMRM web site, and elsewhere. If you are interested in becoming involved in this initiative, please contact Diego at dhernando@wisc.edu.

Finally, note that in this month’s issue of Magn Reson Med you will start to see papers that use a new typesetting and copyediting process, with an updated look. Over the next couple of months all papers published in Magn Reson Med will switch to this new look.

Best wishes,
Peter Jezzard, PhD

HEADLINES

  • Don’t forget to keep checking Study Group Virtual Special Issues that can be found at the journal homepage. Most ISMRM Study Groups have created Virtual Special Issues, with the aim of summarising the latest research in these topic areas. The idea is to update these at least annually to ensure that they remain “living documents” and hopefully will be a valuable resource to Study Group members. We have recently added or updated ones from the Pulmonary MR Study Group; the Quantitative MR Study Group; the Placental and Fetal MRI Study Group; the MR in Radiation Therapy Study Group; and the Motion Detection and Correction Study Group!
  • In partnership with the Reproducible Research Study Group (RRSG) we offer authors the option of a Code Review of any code they provide in a Data Availability Statement. If authors request it in their cover letter, the RRSG will download the code and check that it installs and can be run. For details see here and an editorial on the experiences of the first year of its use here.
